Three Men In A Boat

Title: Three Men In A Boat

Author: Jerome.K.Jerome

Main Characters: Harris, George, Montmorency

Description Of One Of The Main Characters: Harris is the funniest of all three men and he is the only one who is not pleased with any work except his own. He misses the boat in the dark. H e once tries to cook for his friends using a sack full of  vegetables. He once falls into river Thames while cooking. He tries to speak in monotone forever.

Whom I like and Why: I like all the characters. The whole story is funny and all the three men play a very good part in it.

Setting/Theme Of The Story: Three unintelligible men decide to travel in a boat in search of rest and a change of scene. They head up to river Thames. They pass through the glinting barges, the wooded towpath and the trim-kept villas on either side. They fall inside the Thames and loose their boat many times in a day. They become tired. They realise life out on a boat is a far more appalling alternative for a change of scene.

Part I Enjoyed The most: I enjoyed the part when Harris is compared to Uncle Podger as he is ready to take the burden of everything himself and put it on the backs of other people. He says:

"Now, you get a bit of paper and write down, and you get the grocery catalougue, George, and somebody give me a bit of pencil, and then I will make out a list."

Different Ending: The three men think that life on a boat is always amusing. They start to go boating every weekend and find it easier than it had been. They get used. They are perfectly convinced about the amount of rest they get and the change of scenery. River Thames becomes their  favourite forever.

    1. Character sketch of Jerome.....a funny man....thinking anything to be a joke....lives the life the way it takes it to...no practical thinking..just tries to do everything the way he is asked...has a dog..he loves food and hates workJerome K. Jerome is like the Victorian Bill Bryson. Three Men in a Boat is not a bad travelogueis thus confused by his symptoms that he refers to a medical book and happens to misconceive that he possesses virtually each doable ailment recorded in there.

      Character sketch of George -
George was a bank clerk (who 'goes to sleep at a bank from ten to four each day, except Saturdays, when they wake him up and put him outside at two ') and was living in a back room of the same house. The landlady suggested that, to save money, the two might share a room. They 'chummed ' together for some years - both shared a love of the theatre -and a life-long friendship was formed. George, who remained a bachelor, rose to become manager of Barclays Bank in the Strand and outlived.
      Character sketch of Harris -
Harris is a vain fellow who pretends to be extremely hard working but usually pushes off the burden on other people. he is outspoken and does not hesitate to tell his friends what he thinks about them even if it may not be pleasant. for example he outwardly tells george that his new blazer is utterly revolting and that he must not wear it around them (harris and j). when harris takes on a job he makes a huge fuss out of it like the narator;s uncle podger. it may not be anything majorly important but if harris is going to do it .... the world would know about it. he also thinks very highly of himself and his voice though his friends do not want him to even attempt singing. he is extremely fascinated by tombs and graveyards much to j 's dislike. he is also quite short tempered and it is best to let him rant off his anger rather than try and talk to him about it.he wouldn 't mind a drink at any time of the day and enjoys the company of his friends .

Montmerency is not portrayed as a mere dog.In face, he is treated at par with the human members of the rowing party. He is a fox-terrier who are clever, adventurous and fighters
Montmerency does not like cats.Once he saw a big black cat.He began to run after the poor cat.The cat showed no hurry. It sat down in the middle of the road. The look of the cat was such that Montmorency had to stop and look back at the cat. After a while, the cat went away.montmorency came back, embarrased. If anybody now says "cats" to Monmorency,he shrinks and looks up piteously at him as if to say "please don 't".
Montmorencyis adventurous. He cannot let any challenge unresponded.Whenever he saw the boiling kettle,it seemed to challenge him.He got an opportunity once to seize it by the spout. With a loud yelp left the boat and took a round of the island, running and stopping every now and then to bury his nose in cool mud. From that day he began to dread the kettle.
Montmorency is a fighter by nature. At Oxford he had eleven fights on the first day and fourteen on the second. He was so happy that he thought he had gone to heaven..!!!!

Unlike the three human characters that are taken from real life, Montmorency is entirely fictional. He represents ‘inner consciousnesses’. According to J, he is an angel too good for this world but is somehow kept back from the mankind.
Montmorency is J’s pet dog. He is of a fox-terrier breed and this makes it nearly impossible to train him to be gentler. He is generally of violent nature and is fond of noise and action. He does not take delight in ‘romantic solitude’. It is only he who is not happy with the idea of the boating trip. He feels that there is nothing to do for him on a boat trip as he neither cares for scenery nor smoking. He believes the idea of boating to be a ‘bally foolishness

  19. character sketch
harris-harris appears to be a practical young man, who could not see much romanticism in the world around him. he is fond of drinking and not too fond of working hard. he did not seem to have much imagination and was more aggressive than other two. he was very fond of eating.. he had a strange fascination for cemeteries and tombs and would like to visit the graveyard unlike the narrator
he did not have much aesthetic sense and dressed in loud colours like orange and yellow, which did not suit him. he was a terrible singer and could never remember the words of a song. he did think he was a great comic singer, though, and often sang comic songs, which ended up being not very funny.he was a frank out spoken young man, which was evident when he ensured that george did not play his banjo well within his hearing

Apart from this I have one question to which I didn't get any answer. The get question is why you like/dislike the novel. Can you please answer me by tomorrow? Its my humble request to you.
